Language & Literacy Development in Canadian Children


Study Information
Purpose of Study
Our study aims to better understand literacy development in Canadian children. This study focuses on vocabulary and phonological processing (i.e. sound-based awareness), two very important language skills which help facilitate reading development.

Your child's participation will help us better understand child literacy development as well as develop linguistic and culturally-effective literacy tools for communities in Canada and internationally.
Compensation
Up to $20 educational gift card (such as Chapters, or Indigo)

Inclusions:
One of the following applies to your child:
  1. Speaks and understands English only
  2. Speaks and understands English and another language
  3. Speaks English and speaks and/or understands Hindi
  4. Speaks English and speaks and/or understands Urdu
  5. and
  6. Child is between the ages of 4 and 8

Exclusions:
  1. Children with language and or literacy difficulties

What You'll Be Asked to Do:
  1. First, 2 language and demographic background questionnaires (for parent completion: 10-15 minutes)
  2. Then, 3 English word games involving picture-naming, sound-based games and reading (1 hour)
  3. If your child knows another language in addition to English (i.e., Urdu or Hindi), then a session involving 3 Urdu/Hindi word games (picture-naming, sound-based games and reading) is an option (1 hour)
Total time is approximately 2-3 hours.
